My parents were both addicts, I grew up in and out of many different foster families and was in three group homes. Eventually, at the age of seventeen I started the path to my own addiction, which progressed for the next ten years. Fast forward another ten years to my life today; I have been in recovery for ten years now. I have three children, I have earned two college degrees, I am a productive member of society.
I do this job because I want to show people that it can be done! I want to be the person on the front lines fighting the stigma. I want patients to see me and be inspired and have hope that they can do it too. I want the community to see me and believe that people can change because I am living proof. I am of course a professional, but the work we are doing here is also very personal for me, and I believe in it one hundred percent. I was blessed with grace and dignity in my lessons through life and I just want to share that with others.
